How to start salsa in London
Where to take your first class, what it costs, and where to dance after.
London is a great city to learn salsa. There are beginner courses and drop-in classes all over town, and friendly socials to practise at once you've got the basics. This guide covers how to choose a style, whether to start with a course or a drop-in class, what it usually costs, and where to go dancing afterwards. If you're completely new, read How to start salsa dancing first for what to expect in your first class.
Pick a style first
There are lots of styles of salsa, and London schools teach many of them. Each feels quite different on the dance floor. A few you'll often see:
- LA style and crossbody ("on1"). A popular place to start.
- New York style ("on2"). Smoother, and danced on a different beat.
- Cuban salsa. Danced in a circular pattern, and very social.
These are just some of the styles out there, and you'll come across others too. Each school's listing says which style it teaches. Pick one and stick with it while you learn the basics. Many schools also run classes to help you switch styles later.
Beginner courses
A course is the quickest way to get the basics down. You join a group of complete beginners for a few weeks and build up week by week, with the same faces each time. New groups start regularly, so there's rarely long to wait.

Not ready to commit to a course? Many London schools run weekly beginner classes you can drop in to, and some offer a cheaper trial class for first-timers. Some also finish the night with a social practice, a relaxed chance to try out what you've just learned.
What it costs
Prices vary by school and area, but as a rough guide:
- A trial class is often cheaper than a regular class, to make it easy to try.
- A drop-in beginner class is usually around £10 to £25.
- A beginner course usually works out cheaper per class, if you're planning to go every week.
Each listing shows the school's current price.
Where to dance afterwards
Once you've had four to six classes, try a social. London's salsa socials range from Friday-night parties to relaxed Sunday afternoons, and they're welcoming to beginners. They're also the best way to get better quickly.
